Consisting of a beech wood frame with elegantly arched armrests and a wicker backrest and seat, this armchair is skillfully designed and masterfully handcrafted from natural materials.

The clean lines of the softly curved wooden frame are contrasted by the paper cord (aka Danish cord) wickerwork, resulting in a refined simplicity often associated with the Bauhaus movement.

While there are no maker's marks or labels, this chair probably hails from Germany and was made some time in 1950's - the design is clearly "inspired" by the works of Erich Dieckmann.

Dieckmann, who enrolled at the Bauhaus in Weimar in 1921, belonged to Walter Gropius's inner circle of students and was significantly influenced by him. While his career was short lived, he is recognized as one of the most important furniture designers at the Bauhaus. He became famous for his "Typenmöbel", a line of standardized furniture, especially his designs for strictly geometric wooden and curved wicker furniture.

The chair is is in very good and stable condition, a testament to the craftsmanship applied when this chair was made. There are of course some slight signs of its age and use, which add to the charm and character of this piece. Most importantly, the chair is actually rather comfortable to sit in!

"Let's allow our modern homes to have a human touch. Something that isn't overly sophisticated, something temporary... " — Erich Dieckmann,  Die Kunst, 61 (1931), p. 180f.
