This rare and extravagant 1960s cocoon pendant light is in excellent condition!
With a body diameter of about 53 cm (20.9 in) and height of about 40 cm (15.8 in) this is an eye-catching statement piece!
The cocoon gives a warm and diffused warm light. The beautiful pearl/silk patina is a strong indication this light fixture hails from a NON SMOKING environment.
Nota Bene: There are no tears or holes. There is a barely visible and rather tiny spot of red coloring on top of the shade. Please refer to the detail photos.
The light is currently wired for a European light bulb and voltage and can be easily rewired.
HISTORY:
Often attributed and very close to the designs of Achille & Pier Giacomo Castiglioni. In fact this cocoon was manufactured in Germany bei “ Goldkant Leuchten between 50s and 60s . Designer Fritz Wauer who is credited by FLOS for devising the technology of spraying the self wrapping foam onto metal frames. Just like Silk worms constructing their cocoon. After that innovation this was brought to the established Italian FLOS Designers like Carlo & Tobia Scarpa, Dino Gavina and of course to Achille & Pier Giacomo Castiglioni. This makes these Goldkant models the original predecessor to later cocoon lamps.
We think it would fit well with any Mid-Century Modern or even modernist or minimalist interior setting. Extravagantly designed and definitely inspired the works of Achille & Pier Giacomo Castiglioni by softening the edges from square to round.
