Raw, unrefined, bold and yet wonderfully crafted, this pair of bookends in the Brutalist style perfectly captures the robust and powerful gravitas of the mighty buffalo!

While there is a charming arts and crafts naivety to these bookends at first glance, a closer look reveals a rather sculptural quality:
The body, legs and tail on each buffalo are made from geometrically cut metal plates forming a stylized buffalo silhouette - with the only curved line leading from the horns to the hump. A drilled whole serves as the bull's eye and randomly placed weld drops (spatter) add texture and depth. The pointed horns are a nice detail and give the impression of forward movement, as if the buffalo were preparing themselves to push forward. Finally, some patina and rusty spots lend the appearance of a thick, shaggy, fur in black and brown.

While we have no makers mark, we suspect that these bookends hail from Austria in the early half of the last century. The bookends are in good sturdy condition and will make a decorative addition to their new home, whether they are placed on a desk or a shelf.
