Victorian Tiger Bamboo, Cane & Chinoiserie Dressing Table With Drawers, England 1880's, Aesthetic Movement

The unique dark-and-light patterns of the Tiger Bamboo (aka Tortoiseshell Bamboo) frame, combined with the decorative Chinoiserie top and the original beveled swivel mirror make this dresser a noticeable eye-catcher!

Made during the "Japonisme" craze in late Victorian England, this visually striking, Eastern-inspired  dressing table perfectly captures the handcrafted, nature-focused ideals of the Arts and Crafts and Aesthetic movements!

The embossed leather pigeon holes and Victorian brass handles complement the floral patterns on panel of the glove drawer and the dresser top and make this a characteristic piece of British Colonial furniture where traditional designs with rattan, leather, and brass were often enhanced with African and Asian motifs.

Iconic London department stores like Liberty & Co and Goodyers of Regent Street collaborated with cabinet makers to create pieces like this dresser, which perfectly suited the era’s fascination with exotic, Asian-inspired designs that served as a status symbols of worldly travel.

Despite its age of 140+ years and having travelled across Europe in the last century (we sourced it in Germany), this dresser is in good, stable condition - albeit with some signs of its age and use most notably on the surfaces. All drawers move well and are lined with colorful paper, which might be later additions. Unfortunately the keys to locks have been lost over the years and the mirror does show some black spots. This is a beautifully crafted late-19th-century design, that will continue to serve its new home well, whether it is placed in a bedroom as a vanity table, in a hallway as a sideboard or in a living space as an alternative credenza to display decorative objects, books, or art on the top surface.
